Diane and I have spent a weekend in NYC almost every summer since our paths crossed during a semester in England eight years ago. One of the things that we credit for keeping our long distance friendship alive is our mutual love for Gossip Girl. The scandalous lives of Manhattan’s elite inevitably influence our summer trips and this weekend was no exception.
“The Run for the Roses,” more commonly known as the Kentucky Derby, has been on the first weekend in May since 1875 and is one of my favorite longstanding, all-American traditions. I love every step of the event—from the women arriving in their big hats, to the blanket of roses draped over the winner at the end. So whether you are one of the lucky ones going to the race, or one of the at-home spectators (or even if you don’t watch at all!), this just wouldn’t be Derby weekend without a refreshing and oh-so-southern mint julep in your hand.
I knew that this past weekend was going to be absolutely full of visiting family and friends coming and going and I planned to be prepared. I wanted to have a fun spring cocktail that paid homage to this past week of beautiful weather, ready to serve. Our rosemary bush seems to have perked up with this sampling of spring weather so I took advantage and made enough rosemary simple syrup to last us through the weekend. The Rosemary Gin Fizz was a big hit and I can see it making regular appearances throughout our spring and summer.
