One of the biggest pieces of advice I would give to new homeowners (especially other enthusiastic and budget conscious newlyweds), is to hold off on purchasing new furniture. Try to give yourself time to actually live, entertain and relax in your new home before you make assumptions about how you will use each space or commit to furniture purchases.
Our deck is a good example of what might happen if you jump the gun on furnishing a space in your home. I purchased an adorable bistro table for our balcony the week we moved into our new place. I had this romantic notion that Daniel and I would take our evening meals on the deck when the weather permitted. I wasn’t wrong, we did have many sunset meals on that charming table, but it was extremely limiting when we were hosting. We found ourselves always wishing we had an outdoor space to go with our guests and our cocktails after a long dinner party and the bistro table for two just wasn’t cutting it.
It took me a full year to decide what would be best on our deck and then another month or two to compromise what I thought would be ideal with what we could actually afford (champagne taste on a beer budget). I am so excited to share with you our “deck reveal” and I can’t wait to host many of you for a cocktail (or two) out here very soon! This adorable bronze pedestal table was a HomeGoods find that I snagged on clearance! I use it as the bedside table in the guest room and then pop it outside when we are going to entertain and need the extra surface area. I was so pleased to find this affordable and attractive lounge set. The cushions are a bit slim which looks great, but makes the added padding of throw pillows necessary. Glass planters are hard to come by and I couldn’t find the perfect one. I ended up ordering this vase on Amazon and having my very handy husband drill a few holes in the bottom. I then scoured the Lowes garden section for the perfect succulents and am thrilled with how this planter turned out! Both of those amazing lanterns are from HomeGoods and I outfitted them with remote control operated LED candles. We keep the remote in the guest room by the door and I love how easy it is to hit a button and set the mood! I think maybe the only one who likes our new outdoor lounge space more than I do is Chloe. I had a hard time getting her off the couch long enough to get that aeriel view. This beautiful brass mister is from the lovely Quirk Hotel Gallery’s gift shop. Unfortunately for my Richmond friends, I purchased the last one but the good news is that Amazon has the same one! I love the convenience of having mint growing on our balcony. Using an old wine bottle to offer your potted plants extra water on a particularly hot day is a great trick and can add some fun visual appeal. Lastly, these amazing pillows and this perfect throw ties the whole space together and makes it oh-so cozy. I can’t wait to have you over soon! Happy summer!
