For the majority of the year, my go-to beverage is a tall glass of red wine (preferably Spanish with a side of cheese and charcuterie), but around this time every year the rising temperatures inspire a shift in my palate that demands the coldest, most refreshing beverage there is. With this projecting to be the first solid week with temperatures in the 90’s every day, it’s time to dust off the copper mugs and grab a huge bag of fresh limes- it’s Moscow Mule Season.
Allegedly this beverage hit it’s height of popularity during the vodka craze of the 50’s, but with the combination of the sweltering summer temperatures and copper’s trendy status, I wouldn’t be surprised if summer of 2016 steals that top spot.
The name Moscow Mule is a nod to the popular Russian liquor used to make this tasty beverage. Grab your copper mug because it really is essential for making this drink as cold and refreshing as possible. I picked mine up in a set of four from Target but I have seen great individual ones at Home Goods, and Crate and Barrel has some particularly charming ones.
To make this refreshing limy beverage you will need:
- 1.5 oz of Vodka
- Ginger Beer (about 4 oz)
- A sprig of mint to garnish
Pour the vodka into your mule mug full of ice. Fill the rest of the way with ginger beer and then squeeze about 4 lime wedges over top. Drop the squeezed wedges in and give it a couple stirs. Garnish with a sprig of mint and enjoy immediately!
